You know it cannot be formatted like this to install OS X on, yes I get that youre trying to get it to show up at all. Ive installed a lot of SSDs in Macs, and its usually not a problem. Older Macs were not designed (especially the cable) with the high throughput of an SSD in mind and may fail. For example, I have an SSD that works perfectly booting as an external USB, but when I install it in a 2008 MacBook Pro, it kind of boots and flakes out like mad. Just trying to get it to show up in Disk Utility to simply format it. Ill try changing out the cable tonight (maybe, if I have time) and giving it a go. Think that could be it level 1 3 points 2 years ago I recently did same with mid-2011 iMac. Had to format drive first by connecting it to another Mac, than installed it into the iMac. Used a USB flash drive to install 10.12, no issues. Then updated to 10.13 via the App Store. Im guessing you formatted it incorrectly Can you use disk utility on another Mac to format it Thats what I did. I did take the hard drive out and format it to FAT in my Ubuntu box. When I installed it again, it would show up when you clicked on Install OS, but in disk utility, nothing. I am also doing the same setup as you - I have a USB flash drive with the OS on it. I did the quick one and it showed up in Ubuntu as a usable and healthy drive.
